2002 Schedule ---- Kirtlandia Home ---- Back

General Meeting -November 9, 2002

After coffee and conversation, President Barbara Coleman called the general meeting
of the Kirtlandia Society to order at 10:03 a.m. in the Rare Book Room of The Cleveland
Museum of Natural History. President Coleman welcomed approximately 57 members
and guests, including Bob Segedi's Future Scientists.

Treasurer Charles Greenwald reported receipt of $2,000 in membership dues to date.
He reported that the Endowment lost $16,000 in the most recently reported quarter.
Hopefully, this will go back up when the stock market recovers.

Walt Stephens reported that at the end of September the Adopt-A-Student Account
had $862. An additional $16,000 will be required to fund 8 students next summer.
Should we have proposals from 9 curators, an additional $2,100 will be needed.
Walt will be sending out his customary, annual solicitation letter soon. He continues
to work on guidelines for the AAS program and the Endowment in the future, i.e.
disbursement/handling of the funds, etc., should the program/Kirtlandia cease to exist
and should there be a shift in the Museum's focus.

Jane Litt gave a report for the Education Committee. She highlighted the Science
Spectacular, the Smead Discovery Center, the Science Resource Center's Outreach
Program, and the future "Science to Go" newsletter, etc. The committee is also working
on a summer intern ("Summer Star") for the Astronomy Department. The Board is
scheduled to discuss this at its meeting today.

On behalf of the Membership Committee, Barb Sciulli asked members to send in their
dues payments as soon as possible. She is still taking orders for shirts with the Kirtlandia logo.

Bob Taylor, Program Chairman, then introduced Dr. Joe Hannibal, the Museum's own
curator of Invertebrate Paleontology. Joe, in his own inimitable style, gave a slide presentation
on a medley of his various projects from arthropods to cemeteries. Joe also brought to
everyone's attention the publication of an article in the "Ohio Journal of Science." Two
former Adopt-A-Students were contributors.

After questions and answers, President Coleman adjourned the meeting at 11:30 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan MacDermott, Recording Secretary
